NGK to Increase Production Capacity of Ceramics for Semiconductor Manufacturing Equipment

CompanyProductsIR

NGK Corporation (hereinafter, “NGK”) today announced that it has decided to establish a new production site for ceramics for semiconductor manufacturing equipment in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture. It plans to invest approximately ¥70.0 billion on constructing a new plant, with mass production scheduled to commence in October 2029. Production at the new plant will be undertaken by NGK CERAMIC DEVICE CO., LTD., a manufacturing subsidiary of NGK.

NGK currently produces ceramics for semiconductor manufacturing equipment at sites including Chita Site (Handa City, Aichi Prefecture) and Komaki Site (Komaki City, Aichi Prefecture). To address surging demand, it has acquired approximately 104,000 m2 of land adjacent to its plant for manufacturing automotive-related products in Nomi City, Ishikawa Prefecture, where it will construct a new production site. With mass production scheduled to start in October 2029, the operation of the new factory will increase NGK Group’s production capacity for semiconductor manufacturing equipment ceramics by approximately 20%.

The new plant will produce ceramic functional components (susceptors) that support silicon wafers, a material used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment.  NGK is leveraging the superior properties of its ceramics, including strength and heat resistance, to develop and mass produce high-quality, high performance susceptors. These susceptors deliver stable performance in semiconductor manufacturing processes, even when exposed to high-temperature corrosive gases and plasma, contributing to higher yields and improved productivity in the semiconductor manufacturing field.

The semiconductor market is forecast to continue growing in the medium to long term, driven by demand for use in mobile devices, as well as factors such as the spread of generative AI and expansion of data centers. Semiconductor manufacturers are expected to continue making investments aimed at sophisticating and miniaturizing manufacturing processes in the advanced logic and advanced memory fields, which will further raise demand for NGK products used in these manufacturing processes.

Additionally, since production bases for ceramics used in semiconductor manufacturing equipment are currently concentrated in the Tokai region, the establishment of the new Ishikawa factory is also positioned as an important base from the perspective of strengthening supply system resilience and BCP (Business Continuity Planning).

Under its medium- to long-term vision, “NGK Group Vision Road to 2050” looking ahead to 2050, the NGK Group is aiming to transition its business portfolio to the Carbon Neutral and Digital Society fields. In particular, the semiconductor-related field is positioned as a core business driving future growth, and NGK will continue to contribute to the development of the semiconductor industry and the realization of a digital society through ongoing technology development and capital investment.
